Description
Ridelines are one of the UK’s top centres for training mountain bike leaders & guides.
Level 2 British Cycling Mountain Bike Leadership Award Training: These leadership training courses and assessments are industry standard and part of British, Scottish, and Welsh Cycling national programme for mountain bike leadership qualification. This is a two day practical course held in Innerleithen followed by a separately available one-day practical assessment after a consolidation period agreed with your Ridelines tutor. This allows sufficient time for you to hone the new skills and knowledge you have obtained during training.
Developing leaders at an accessible, inclusive grassroots level.
At our HQ in Innerleithen we provide carefully organised teaching areas with suitable technical riding challenges. It’s a great base for the duration of the course. Our carefully planned syllabus will make sure you make tangible progress over the two days. You will learn the skills to manage and assess your group whilst ensuring your own technical riding skills are up to scratch.
The course covers a wide variety of topics including:
• The planning and delivery of appropriate rides or your group.
• Leading / guiding techniques for effective group management.
• Map reading and navigation on the move for a flowing journey.
• Management of accidents and emergency situations.
• Equipment provisions and trailside repairs.
• Core mountain bike techniques.
• Managing risk
• GB wide Access legislation
Ideal skills and pre-requisites for training include:
• Being 18 years old or over.
• Have mountain biking experience in a variety of terrain and weathers.
• Be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate “red grade trails”
• Hold a level of fitness required to ride around 40km over 2 days.
• Have a servicable, modern mountain bike and equipment to be serf sufficient during the course.
• Hold a current two-day outdoor First Aid certificate (this can be undertaken at a later date)
You may also need to provide your tutor with a logbook of evidence of your recent rides in appropriate terrain. We recommend a minimum of 15 quality rides in the 12 months prior to assessment, four of which should be 4 hours or more in duration. A logbook will be sent to you upon registering on the award pathway. The logbook should provide evidence not only of the location, duration and route of the rides but also demonstrate to the tutor your ability to self-reflect on each ride. For example, how you performed, how the conditions impacted the experience and if there were any incidence you had to deal with during these rides.
When will I be ready for my Level 2 Assessment?
If you want to talk through your suitability for the Level 2 British Cycling Mountain Bike Leadership Award before applying, please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss your questions. Once you have registered, you will receive the detailed handbook which contains everything you need to know about level 2 MTB Leadership.. You should familiarise yourself with the content of the handbook before attending the course. You will need a valid first aid certificate to undertake assessment. You can find more information about Level 2 assessments here.
What is a Nav-pack and when will I get it if I select it?
Ordering a nave pack is not essential for training. But it is advantageous to have so as to understand it’s role in planning and navigation. Furthermore it does contain the kit you’ll need for your MBL2 assessment should you choose Ridelines to host it. If you order a Nav-pack in conjunction with training or assessment for any leadership course it will be waiting for you when you arrive at the classroom. If you require it to be sent out to you, please use the order notes function in the checkout to request this. Postage is free.

“We have a youth group we are planning on taking out regularly. The course content is great, a real insight into leadership and the tutor really supported us in our own learning. We’ll go away feeling much more confident about leading groups and knowing we have all the skills needed to head out safely and in control of our group.”

Scott Whyte –
Excellent weekend. Andy is knowledgeable, friendly and a great tutor. I learned loads and hope to introduce this into the school curriculum soon. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys mountain biking and wants to take it that little bit further.
Charlie Billington (verified owner) –
Excellent course, really well delivered by Allan, with well thought out structure. Really great atmosphere and vibes. Introduced me to some interesting ideas and concepts especially with regard to making the experience fun and enjoyable for your clients. It has given me the confidence and enthusiasm to complete assessment.
Peter –
A brilliant course with a great instructor. Allan was very patient but assertive regarding the cadence of the learning. I have done a MIAS course (10 years ago) and recently a UKMBC course. This is by far the best of the three. Way more content and an all round feel of being more relevant to guiding MTBers. A great experience and as a life long mountain biker it has given me a new outlook on the sport.
